Diseases Of The Eye

Cataract

What is Cataract?
The word “cataract” is derived from the Greek word katarraktes which loosely translates to waterfall. It was believed that a congealed fluid from the brain had flowed in front of the lens of the eyes. Today, eye cataract is defined as the clouding of the lens of your eyes.

When proteins present in the eye form clumps, it muddles the vision with a cloudy, hazy outline. It gradually develops and starts interfering with your vision and unless treated could lead to total blindness.

Glaucoma

What is Glaucoma?
Glaucoma is a set of conditions which results in damage to the optic nerve. The optic nerve is located at the back of the eye, and it transmits visual signals from the eye to the brain helping in visualization. Damage to the optic nerve could result in blindness. In glaucoma, the optic nerve is often damaged by an unusually high pressure exerted on it. This damage to the optic nerve could ultimately result in blindness.

Glaucoma is also said to be the leading cause of blindness in adults. In a few types of glaucoma, the patient shows undetectable to no symptoms. The impact is steady to such an extent that it would not be noticed until the condition is at a serious stage

Diabetic Retinopathy

What is Diabetic Retinopathy?
Diabetic retinopathy occurs when high blood sugar levels cause damage to blood vessels in the retina

Corneal Ulcer (Keratitis)

What is Corneal Ulcer (Keratitis)?
A corneal ulcer (keratitis) is an erosion or an open sore on the cornea which is the thin clear structure of the eye that refracts light. If the cornea becomes inflamed due to infection or injury, an ulcer may develop.

Fungal Keratitis

What is Fungal Keratitis?
The eye is made up of many parts that are extremely delicate in nature. This is why we should treat our eyes with the utmost care and keep them safe. Keratitis refers to the infection caused in the cornea which is the clear membrane that covers the color part of the eye and plays a huge role in vision.

Fungal Keratitis as the name suggests is caused by fungal infections in the cornea. This could be because of multiple reasons but an injury to the eye or contact lenses are the most common reasons for fungal keratitis. It causes the corona to swell up and is most common in tropical or subtropical areas. It is also called a fungal corneal ulcer. Fungal keratitis is extremely common in India, especially in south India and if left untreated then fungal keratitis can lead to loss of vision as well.

Macular Hole

What is a Macular hole?
A Macular hole is a hole in the central part of the retina, which is most important for vision. The retina is the innermost light-sensitive layer of the eye, akin to a film of a camera where the image is formed. In some cases, the macula nerve cells separate from one another and unplug from the back of the surface. This makes a hole in the back of the eye which can affect the eyes in multiple ways.

Treatment

From routine eye tests and eye check-ups to critical surgical interventions, our hospital provides a holistic treatment for your eyes.

Glued IOL

It is a technique where the intraocular lens is placed in the normal anatomical position by using glue when the capsular support is not there to place it, thereby bringing back the optics of the eye to normal.

PDEK

Pre Descemet’s Endothelial Keratoplasty (PDEK) is a partial thickness corneal transplant. The diseased endothelial cells are removed from the patient’s eye and selectively replaced with a new layer of endothelial cells which are taken from the donated eye. The endothelial cells are the healthy cells lining the back of the cornea which pump fluid from the cornea to prevent the cornea swelling. The normal endothelial count is 2000 – 3000 cells/mm2. When the cells decrease in number < 500 cells/mm2, corneal decompensation occurs, clarity of the cornea reduces and eventually the vision becomes cloudy.

Oculoplasty

Oculoplasty is a term that covers a variety of procedures that involve eyelids, eyebrows, orbits, tears ducts, and the face. Oculoplastic procedures involve both medically necessary procedures and cosmetic procedures.
The scope of Oculoplasty extends across a wide range of procedures from correcting droopy eyelids to fitting artificial eye prosthesis. Oculoplastic surgeries are carried out by specially trained surgeons and are often highly customised, based on the patient’s condition.
Oculoplasty is often referred as both an art and a science that can help improve the function, comfort, and aesthetic appearance of the face.

Healthy Tips For The Eyes

Eat Right To Protect Your Sight

Keep your eyes healthy by eating a well-balanced diet. Load up on different types of fruits and veggies, especially leafy greens like spinach, kale, and collard greens. Fish like salmon, tuna, and halibut have been shown to help your eyes, too.

Keep The Germs Away

Always wash your hands before putting them close to your eyes, especially if you’re putting in or taking out contact lenses.

Give Your Eyes A Break

Do you spend a lot of time looking at a computer, phone, or TV screen? Staring at any one thing for too long can tire your eyes. Give your eyes a rest with the 20-20-20 rule: Every 20 minutes, look about 20 feet away for 20 seconds.
